Assumptions and conventions
- Deposits grow at the exact per-period rate derived from the nominal rate and compounding frequency. Bank conventions differ slightly (many Indian RDs compound quarterly on a monthly deposit) — set the compounding to match your product.
- Start-of-period deposits earn interest for the period they are made in; end-of-period deposits do not.
- The rate is your assumption and stays constant for the term.
- Values are calculated at full precision and rounded for display; columns may differ from totals by a small rounding amount.
What this calculator does
It projects a fixed deposit made every period — monthly is typical — growing at your assumed rate until maturity. In India this is a recurring deposit (RD); in the UK, a regular saver; elsewhere simply a scheduled savings plan. The engine converts your rate and compounding frequency to an exact per-period rate, so mismatched frequencies are handled correctly.
Bank conventions differ slightly: many Indian RDs compound quarterly on monthly deposits, which this calculator reproduces when you set quarterly compounding. Set the options to match your product rather than assuming one bank's method.
Formula
Maturity value = D·((1+i)ⁿ − 1)/i, times (1+i) for start-of-period deposits, where i = (1 + effective annual rate)^(1/deposits per year) − 1 and n is the number of deposits.
Assumptions
- The rate is your assumption and constant for the term; no live rates.
- Start-of-period deposits earn interest in the period they are made (the common RD convention); end-of-period deposits do not.
- Fees, tax and inflation are optional and default to zero.

Worked example
1,000 per month for 2 years at 6% compounded monthly with start-of-period deposits: 24 deposits totalling 24,000 grow to about 25,559 — roughly 1,559 of interest.
Frequently asked questions
How is an RD different from a fixed deposit?
A fixed deposit is one lump sum; a recurring deposit is the same amount every period. Because later deposits earn interest for less time, the maturity value is lower than a lump sum of the same total made on day one.
When are deposits assumed to be made?
You choose: start of period (the common bank convention, and the default) or end of period. Start-of-period deposits earn one extra period of interest each.
Why does my bank's figure differ slightly?
Banks differ in compounding frequency, day-count conventions and rounding. Set the compounding to match your product; remaining differences are usually a few currency units of rounding.
Can I model a growing deposit?
Yes — the annual increase option raises the deposit every 12 months, useful for plans that step up with your income.
Is tax deducted from RD interest?
In several countries, yes (India applies TDS above thresholds, for example). Enter a tax rate to approximate the effect; exact treatment depends on your circumstances.
